Accused of intelligence with the West, Bettina is arrested in 1984 and presented to a young Stasi officer, Jan, for questioning. They meet almost daily for six months in interrogation sessions. In time, the incredible happens: they fall in love. With a few words and gestures, and using a code devised by Bettina, they manage to communicate: 11 means "you are beautiful", 12, "I love you." They constantly run the risk of being discovered. Then they are separated. Bettina is sentenced and is sent to Hoheneck prison for three years before being deported to the West. By the time the GDR collapses, Jan has worked his way up to the rank of major. Years later, Bettina, who now works as a guide showing visitors around the former Stasi prison, now a memorial, tracks down her interrogator. He is married with a daughter and now works for a logistics company. When they meet again, the improbable happens once more...
